By using a bail bondman, a defendant may post a percentage of the bail instead of the entire amount.

On behalf of the defendant, the bail bondsman puts up the whole sum. 

Bail bondsmen get a part of the bail money from the defendant.

 The bondsman may require collateral to secure the bond.
